A fifth-generation
rancher, Burt was raised on the family ranch, and when he returned from
Colorado College, began ranching for himself. Burt always believed that
high quality cattle come from a complex combination of genetics, good
care of the land and the cattle, and high altitude grass. At Mill Creek
Ranch, we focus on these things to produce a natural, flavorful and
tender high mountain beef.
Why
we sell our beef direct to you
Burt loves genetics and has always been improving our cow herd and keeping
lots of data. He’s a numbers guy. For ten years, our herd was
a cooperative herd for Leachman Cattle Company in Montana. You may never
have heard of the Leachman Cattle Company, but they had the largest
bull sale in the world – very prestigious. Few ranchers had the
criteria to be selected to produce bulls and cows for this sale.
Our herd is genetically
improving every year, and like most ranchers, we sold a beef or two
to our neighbors. They would just rave about our beef, and so would
their guests. We were asked many times to provide Mill Creek Beef.
I guess you could
say that we got “pulled” from our friends, family and community
to sell our beef. We’re glad they did.
“There’s
just something about Gunnison grass,” the old time ranchers say,
“that’s makes for great cattle.” We believe it, and
we know that people in Gunnison believe it too. If you live here, you
know it takes a special person to live in and love the Gunnison climate,
and it takes a special cow for the same reason.
The
Land
We are fortunate to ranch three ranches – Mill Creek, Ohio Creek
and Burt’s parent’s ranch on the Gunnison River, all within
about 12 miles of one another.
The
Western Slope of Colorado is experiencing tremendous growth, and many
farms and ranches are being developed. We strongly support the continuation
of ranching in the Gunnison Valley, and have actively participated in
placing conservation easements on our ranches. Gunnison benefits from
the hard working efforts of the Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy,
an organization dedicated to preserving ranching and conserving ranchlands
in the Gunnison Country.
We recently purchased
the Ohio Creek Ranch, now our headquarters ranch, with the efforts of
this non-profit organization. The entire Ohio Creek Ranch can never
be developed thanks to the conservation easement.
Our
Mill Creek Ranch is a special place. No photo can really show the beauty
of the Mill Creek Valley. People say that Mill Creek is their favorite
place in Gunnison. We are honored to own land here. Because it is free
of development and in agriculture, it serves as the “gateway”
to this unique and mystic valley.
When
you eat Mill Creek Natural Beef, we want you to feel the cool, clean
breeze, smell the green mountain sage, hear the water in Mill Creek,
and taste the lush Gunnison grass.
